The \u00abarticle factories\u00bb are now moving from copying stolen images to creating bespoke, unique visuals, making it considerably more difficult for publishers and anti-plagiarism tools to detect them. The phenomenon of scientific fraud is frightening insofar as it can provoke a real crisis of knowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>A phenomenon that is accelerating with the power of AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes as no surprise. Up until now, article factories have produced content that was not very original, and could be identified by reused images or blatant inconsistencies. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutrimedia.info\/en\/news\/when-lia-blurs-the-trail-the-problem-of-information-sources\/\">Generative AI<\/a> has totally changed the situation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Text<\/strong>automatic writing of complete articles, imitating academic style and incorporating plausible false data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Images<\/strong>creation of new figures, graphics and computer graphics on request.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allocation<\/strong>misuse of the names of legitimate researchers to lend artificial credibility.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <em>SAGE Publishing<\/em>, These techniques are enabling scientific fraud to keep pace with improvements \u00abcomparable to Moore's Law\u00bb: <strong>The quality and quantity of fake articles doubles as tools become more sophisticated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A systemic risk for the scientific ecosystem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem goes beyond one-off fraud. Fake articles are now feeding the <strong>databases used to train future AI models<\/strong>. This \u00abdata pollution\u00bb could perpetuate and amplify scientific misinformation, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of false knowledge.<br>Risks identified :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Loss of confidence<\/strong> in the scientific literature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wrong decisions<\/strong> based on falsified data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Snowball effect<\/strong> in training AI models.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Magazines already affected<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some magazines have detected the <strong>systematic publication of articles produced by AI<\/strong> and signed in the name of real researchers, without their consent. This type of fraud, which is more difficult to detect than traditional plagiarism, requires new verification protocols: <strong>metadata analysis, image tracing, detection of recurring narrative patterns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the possible answers?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several avenues are being explored in response to this emerging crisis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Training editorial committees<\/strong> identifying weak signals of fraud.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More advanced AI detection tools<\/strong>, combining linguistic analysis, image verification and metadata.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strengthening peer review<\/strong>, with validation of the raw data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traceability<\/strong>certification of the origin of images and data sets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>But above all, more than ever, the good old reflex of cross-checking information sources, verifying them, questioning them... is a topical one!
